As Sir Anthony Hopkins celebrates his 87th birthday, he reflects on a life-changing moment nearly five decades ago that set him on a path to sobriety.

In a heartfelt Instagram video, the legendary actor opened up about his journey and the pivotal day that saved his life.

“Forty-nine years ago today, I stopped,” Hopkins began, mimicking the motion of raising a glass. The Oscar-winning star admitted that, at the time, drinking seemed like “fun.” But the consequences quickly became clear.

“I was in big, big trouble because I couldn’t remember anything,” he revealed. “I was driving a car drunk out of my skull.” Realizing the danger he posed to himself and others, Hopkins sought help.

“On that fatal day, I knew I needed it. I reached out to a group of people just like me. That’s where it started,” he shared. “And I’ve had more fun these 49 years than ever before.”

Speaking to his 5.4 million Instagram followers, Hopkins encouraged others struggling with addiction to seek support.

“If you do have a problem, there’s help,” he said. “Having a drink can seem fine, but for some of us, it’s not. It’s a condition — an allergy, really. There are programs, intergroups, 12-step meetings. You’re not alone.”

Hopkins also dismissed the notion that sobriety equates to boredom. “I used to think, ‘This will be dull.’ But it’s been anything but. They still give me jobs, and I’ve had an unexpectedly long and joyful life.”

The video, filmed by a warm fireplace, continues a tradition for the actor, who regularly shares insights into his recovery journey. It’s part of a legacy of openness, intended to inspire others to confront their struggles.

“Sobriety is a gift,” he noted. “One day at a time.”

Hopkins’ words struck a chord online, with the post garnering over 350,000 likes. Fans praised his honesty and resilience, calling him a “living legend” and a “beacon of hope.”

Hopkins’ battle with alcohol came to a head in 1975. In a 2020 interview with The New York Times, he recounted waking up in an Arizona hotel room with no memory of how he got there.

“I thought, ‘I’ve got to stop this because I’m either going to kill somebody or myself,’” he said. That moment marked the start of his recovery.

The actor’s newfound clarity fueled his career, with iconic roles in films like The Silence of the Lambs and Meet Joe Black. Hopkins attributes much of his success to his sobriety. “I wouldn’t be here without it,” he said in a 2022 video.

Now, at 87, Hopkins is focused on gratitude. “I’m celebrating my long life — an unexpectedly long life,” he said with a smile. “And with that, Happy New Year.”

The actor’s journey is a testament to resilience and the power of change. His message is simple yet profound: “Help is out there. Don’t wait.”

  1. Congratulations! Always loved your work and I am so happy that you can share apart of your own struggles to help other people. Have a wonderful birthday!❤️

  2. I love it. I have 48 years sobriety this May. One of the sayings in the 12 step program is “if you can’t remember the actual event that stopped you, then it probably hasn’t happened”.
Obviously Mr. Hopkins remembers his event. I’m sure we wouldn’t be alive today if it weren’t for the program.. I’m 87.
