A routine flight from Dubai to Moscow turned into a chaotic ordeal when an intoxicated passenger erupted in a violent rage, forcing an emergency landing in Baku, Azerbaijan. Roman Pakhomov, 38, became the center of a mid-air crisis as fellow passengers and crew members scrambled to subdue him.

The shocking incident began when Pakhomov reportedly consumed an unspecified amount of alcohol he had brought on board the Russian-operated Boeing 777. Witnesses described his initial behavior as loud and disruptive, escalating quickly into verbal abuse directed at both crew members and other passengers.

“He was shouting and kicking,” said one passenger who helped restrain him. “It was terrifying. Everyone was worried about what he might do next.”

The situation took a dangerous turn when Pakhomov allegedly began striking the plane’s window with his fist. Fearing for the safety of the aircraft, the captain issued an order to restrain him using plastic handcuffs. However, Pakhomov managed to break free of the restraints and continued his rampage.

“We had no choice but to use seatbelts to tie him down,” recounted another passenger. Video footage shows Pakhomov tied to a seat with his arms restrained behind him and his legs immobilized, while passengers tried to calm the situation.

The escalating crisis left the crew with no option but to make an emergency landing at Heydar Aliyev International Airport in Baku. The aircraft remained on the ground for nearly three hours while local authorities detained Pakhomov and assessed the damage.

“The man appeared completely unhinged,” an airport official told Russian media. “He was handed over to Azerbaijan police and remains in custody.”

Once sober, Pakhomov reportedly claimed he had no memory of the incident. “He said he didn’t know what happened,” a source close to the investigation shared. “It’s possible the alcohol he consumed contributed to his erratic behavior.”

The plane resumed its journey after the unscheduled stop, arriving in Moscow hours behind schedule. Passengers expressed relief that the ordeal had ended without serious harm.

This dramatic event highlights a troubling trend of disruptive passenger behavior on flights. In December, a similar incident occurred on an EasyJet flight from Morocco to Glasgow. A drunken passenger became abusive toward crew members, prompting an emergency diversion to Faro, Portugal. Videos of the disruptive individual being escorted off the plane by Portuguese police quickly went viral.

“He was spitting and swearing,” said a witness. “Passengers cheered when he was finally removed.”

Growing Concerns

Experts say such incidents underscore the need for stricter regulations on alcohol consumption aboard flights. “Passengers often underestimate the effects of alcohol at high altitudes,” aviation safety consultant Ivan Kuznetsov explained. “We need better enforcement of existing rules and possibly more severe penalties for disruptive behavior.”

As authorities continue their investigation into Pakhomov’s actions, airlines are being urged to take stronger preventative measures. For many, this alarming episode serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance and quick action to ensure passenger safety in the skies.
