Canadian entrepreneur and “Shark Tank” star Kevin O’Leary has sparked intense debate by endorsing the idea of closer economic ties—or even a merger—between Canada and the United States.

In an interview with Fox Business, O’Leary said at least half of Canadians would support the concept of an “economic union” with the U.S., citing interest in the proposal during holiday conversations.

The idea gained traction after President-elect Donald Trump, 78, recently floated the notion of Canada becoming “our 51st state.” Trump’s comments, shared during campaign stops and on social media, have fueled discussions on both sides of the border. O’Leary, a Montreal-born businessman, plans to visit Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate to discuss the proposal in more detail.

O’Leary highlighted the transformative potential of combining the two nations’ economies. “Think about the power of erasing the border between Canada and the United States,” he said. “We could secure the northern territories, create a common currency, streamline taxes, and establish an EU-like trading and travel framework.”

The investor emphasized the global strategic benefits of such a union. “With China and Russia expanding their influence, a unified North America would be an economic and military powerhouse,” he said.

However, O’Leary acknowledged the complexities involved. “There are obviously a lot of issues to address, but Trump’s interest could mark the beginning of something historic.”

The proposal comes at a turbulent time for Canada. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government faces plummeting approval ratings, with speculation mounting about his potential resignation or defeat in the 2025 elections. Critics of Trudeau’s leadership, including O’Leary, argue that Canada’s current administration lacks the vision to negotiate such a monumental deal.

“Nobody wants Trudeau to handle this,” O’Leary asserted. “The 41 million Canadians—most of them—would trust me on this deal.” He also criticized Trudeau for what he described as a “collapsing” government.

Trump’s arguments in favor of Canada joining the U.S. center around economic benefits. In a Christmas Day post on Truth Social, he claimed that Canadian taxes would be cut by over 60% if the country became a U.S. state. He also promised that Canadian businesses would “double in size” and receive unparalleled military protection.

“Canada’s taxes are far too high,” Trump wrote. “By joining the U.S., Canadians would thrive like never before.”

The president-elect has not shied away from making pointed remarks about Trudeau, referring to the prime minister as a prospective “governor” of Canada under U.S. statehood.

Reactions to the proposal have been mixed. While some Canadians express curiosity about the economic benefits, others are fiercely opposed. Montreal resident Sarah Dupont said, “Our identity as Canadians is rooted in being distinct from the U.S. This idea is unthinkable.”

Meanwhile, supporters argue the economic advantages could be worth exploring. “With inflation and government inefficiencies, maybe it’s time to consider bold changes,” said Calgary-based entrepreneur Raj Singh.

As discussions unfold, O’Leary plans to take an active role in shaping the narrative. “I’ll start the conversation,” he said, emphasizing his willingness to work directly with Trump to explore the idea. Whether this proposal gains serious traction or remains a provocative talking point, it’s already igniting a lively debate about the future of Canada-U.S. relations.
