The 2018 royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle captivated millions worldwide, but behind the scenes, tensions simmered. In his 2023 memoir Spare, Prince Harry revealed a contentious exchange between Meghan and Kate Middleton that left Meghan in tears just days before the ceremony.

The clash centered on bridesmaid dresses, particularly the fit of Princess Charlotte’s outfit. According to Harry, the incident unfolded during an already stressful time for Meghan, who was dealing with the fallout from her father’s public scandal and health crisis.

Four days before the wedding, Harry writes, Kate texted Meghan to express dissatisfaction with the “French couture” dresses made for the young bridesmaids. “Charlotte’s dress is too big, too long, too baggy. She cried when she tried it on at home,” Kate allegedly wrote.

Meghan, juggling multiple wedding crises, replied the next morning: “The tailor has been standing by since 8 a.m. Here. At KP. Can you take Charlotte to have it altered, as the other mums are doing?”

But this response didn’t sit well with Kate, who insisted, “No, all the dresses need to be remade.”

Harry recounts that Meghan, visibly overwhelmed, reminded Kate of the challenges she was facing with her father, Thomas Markle Sr., who was scheduled for heart surgery and unable to attend the wedding. Kate reportedly acknowledged the situation but maintained focus on the dresses.

The exchange ended with Kate reluctantly agreeing to alterations but not before tensions boiled over. “Fine,” she reportedly replied, leaving Meghan emotionally drained.

When Harry returned home that evening, he found Meghan “sobbing on the floor.” The next day, Kate visited with flowers and a card to apologize for the incident, an olive branch that Harry describes as meaningful but overshadowed by the broader stress surrounding their wedding.

This revelation adds layers to an ongoing narrative of strained relations within the royal family. Reports of discord first emerged shortly after the wedding, with tabloid stories claiming Meghan had made Kate cry. Meghan later refuted this during the couple’s 2021 Oprah Winfrey interview, stating, “It was the other way around, but she apologized, and I’ve forgiven her.”

Harry’s decision to share text details in Spare marked a shift in the family’s traditionally reserved approach to private matters. Buckingham Palace has consistently declined to comment on the allegations, adhering to their “never complain, never explain” ethos.

The memoir’s account sparked mixed reactions. Some sympathized with Meghan’s plight, praising her resilience under pressure, while others criticized Harry for airing private family disputes. Polls show a divided public, with younger generations expressing greater support for Harry and Meghan, while older demographics lean toward the monarchy.

As the dust settles on these revelations, the public remains captivated by the human dynamics behind royal protocol—a reminder that even fairy-tale weddings aren’t without their challenges.
