A tragic fire in Pratt, Kansas, claimed the life of 38-year-old father Matthew Wright, who perished while trying to rescue his family from their burning home on December 16.

The fire broke out around 2:38 p.m. on the 700 block of West Third Street. Wright was outside when the flames erupted but immediately rushed back inside, determined to save his fiancée Megan and two of his children, unaware they had already escaped.

“The moment he saw the fire, he didn’t think twice,” said longtime friend Charles Coffman Jr. “He was completely focused on getting his family to safety. He didn’t hesitate, didn’t think of himself—only them.”

Firefighters from the City of Pratt arrived quickly at the scene. While Megan and two of the children had safely made it out, Wright remained inside. The firefighters were able to retrieve him, but despite their efforts, he later succumbed to the injuries he sustained.

“It’s hard to put into words how much he meant to us,” Megan said through a tearful statement. “He gave everything for his family. His final act was one of pure love.”

The incident has deeply shaken the local community, especially as Christmas approaches. “Christmases from this day forward are going to be tough for a long time,” said Coffman, who remembered Wright as a dedicated father and friend. “He loved his kids and Megan more than anything. His loss will be felt far beyond just this family.”

The fire, which authorities have determined to be caused by an electrical malfunction, left the surviving family members with non-life-threatening injuries.

In an effort to assist with funeral expenses and provide support for the grieving family, a GoFundMe page has been established. As of this morning, the campaign has raised over $3,000.

Matthew leaves behind his fiancée Megan and five children: Jaylen, Elijah, Darius, Quinton, and Quinn. A memorial service is expected to take place in the coming days.

“Matthew’s final act of bravery was a reflection of the love and devotion he carried every day for his family,” a statement on the GoFundMe reads. “His family, friends, and community are left in shock, mourning a man whose life ended too soon but who lived fully in every moment he spent with those he loved.”

As the community grieves, they remember Matthew not just for his heroism, but for the man he was—loving, selfless, and utterly devoted to his family. His sacrifice will never be forgotten.
