A small Michigan town is mourning the loss of a selfless grandmother who gave her life to save her grandchildren. Jamie Thomas, 48, of Coloma, died tragically on December 7 after her car became stuck on train tracks. Her heroic actions ensured the children’s safety, leaving an indelible mark on the lives she saved.
What started as a simple errand ended in heartbreak. Jamie was driving her two granddaughters, Sofia (4) and Mya (8), along with a friend of Mya’s, when she took a wrong turn on a road lacking railroad crossing signals or lights. Her daughter, Abby Christopher, explained the events leading up to the tragedy.
“She’d been on her way back to my house to grab a coat she left behind,” Abby shared. “She thought she was turning around but ended up on the tracks instead.”
As Jamie worked to maneuver the car, the situation escalated quickly. A train barreled toward them, leaving only moments to act.
According to family spokesperson Shelynn Buckley, Jamie’s focus never wavered. “Jamie immediately got out and started helping the kids. Two of them managed to get out safely, but Mya was ejected from the vehicle during the chaos,” Buckley recounted.
Mya sustained a broken leg and arm, but Sofia escaped with minor soreness. The third child, Mya’s friend, suffered only a sprained ankle.
“Even in her last moments, she made sure those kids were safe,” Buckley emphasized. “That’s the kind of person she was—always putting others first.”
Jamie’s family remembers her as a beacon of love and strength.
“She was simply the best woman in the world,” Abby said tearfully. “She touched so many lives with her kindness. I’m forever thankful God chose her to be our mother.”
Jamie raised four children: Abby (27), Kendall (23), Madison (19), and Bryson (10). She also adored her three grandchildren, Sofia, Mya, and Viviana (1).
Buckley, who had known Jamie for years, described her as “welcoming, genuine, and incredibly sweet.” She added, “She always went above and beyond for her family and friends. Her grandkids were her whole world.”
The loss has been particularly difficult for Jamie’s second eldest, Kendall, who was scheduled to get married on December 12 in Texas.
“She’s heartbroken,” Buckley explained. “She had to go through her wedding while grieving, knowing she couldn’t immediately fly back home to be with the family.”
As the family navigates their grief, the local community has rallied to support them. A GoFundMe campaign has raised over $11,000 to cover funeral expenses and medical bills. Additionally, bake sales are planned for December 14 and 15 to further assist the family.
“It’s amazing to see how people come together during times like this,” Buckley said. “This tragedy reminds us of the strength of community.”
For Jamie’s family, her sacrifice is a reflection of the life she led—one filled with love and unwavering devotion to others.
“She always opened her arms to anyone in need,” Abby said. “Her heart was so big, and she loved fiercely. We lost her too soon, but her legacy will live on in the lives she saved and the love she gave.”
Jamie’s story has left an indelible mark, not just on her family, but on everyone who hears it. Her courage and selflessness are a reminder of the profound impact one life can have.

What she did gives the human spirit new meaning. Love for others goes beyond human understanding but, we truly accept it, receive it, and embrace it. The Bible teaches that, “There is no greater love than for one human being to lay down their life for another.”
