Pope Francis, the 87-year-old leader of the Catholic Church who turns 88 later this month, has sparked renewed health concerns after being seen with a noticeable black bruise on his chin and swelling around his neck. The Pope attended a ceremony at the Vatican on Saturday to install new cardinals, maintaining his full schedule despite the visible marks.

Responding to public concern, Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni issued a statement explaining the injuries were due to a minor fall. “The Holy Father hit his chin on a bedside table,” Bruni said, adding that there were no serious complications. This isn’t the first time the pontiff’s health has drawn attention. He has faced multiple medical challenges over the years, raising questions about his ability to fulfill the demanding responsibilities of his role.

Even in his youth, Pope Francis dealt with serious health issues. At 21, he suffered from pleurisy, a lung condition requiring the removal of part of his right lung. In recent years, his health has visibly declined, requiring him to use a wheelchair due to chronic knee and back problems. Earlier this year, the Pope was hospitalized with breathing difficulties and underwent a three-hour surgery in June to repair an abdominal hernia. Vatican insiders have described his resilience as remarkable. “Despite everything, he never complains,” said an aide who spoke on condition of anonymity. The Pope’s physical challenges have occasionally disrupted his duties. For instance, he missed the Good Friday service in April, a key event in the Christian calendar. However, his commitment remains evident. In 2017, after hitting his head on a popemobile support bar during a trip to Colombia, he completed the trip with a black eye, humorously remarking that “the pain of others matters more.”

During Sunday’s Angelus address, Pope Francis turned global attention away from his health to focus on the escalating violence worldwide. “I appeal to governments and the international community to reach ceasefires on all war fronts by the Christmas celebrations,” he said. He called for peace in conflict zones, including Ukraine, the Middle East, Myanmar, Sudan, and other areas plagued by violence. “We must pray for an end to suffering wherever war exists,” he urged, drawing applause from the gathered faithful.

Catholics and observers have voiced mixed feelings. “His dedication inspires me, but his health is a concern,” said Maria Conti, a pilgrim visiting Vatican City. Others worry about the toll his relentless schedule may take. “We should pray for his strength,” said Father Ignacio Lopez, a priest from Argentina. Despite the concerns, Pope Francis continues to lead with a focus on his mission of global peace and solidarity. As one Vatican official succinctly put it, “The Holy Father’s bruises may fade, but his message of hope remains indelible.”
