In a startling revelation, music legend Elton John, 77, has shared details about a harrowing assassination attempt during one of his concerts. The incident, which unfolded on stage in Greensboro, North Carolina, left fans and bandmates in shock as blood streamed down the singer’s face.
The terrifying event took place mid-performance during John’s acclaimed Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour. According to Radar Online, a concertgoer allegedly threw a metal pipe at the superstar, striking him directly in the temple.
John recounted, “Fans have often thrown things onstage when I’m playing, but usually it’s been something reasonably soft. Not in Greensboro.”
The force of the blow caused the singer to black out, leaving his bandmates confused as they continued playing, unaware of the severity of the situation. Witnesses described the scene as chaotic, with John being hurriedly pulled away from his piano while blood trickled down his face.
Elton credited his bodyguard, former Mr. Universe Jim Morris, for his swift action. “Jim dragged me to the side of the stage,” John said. “There were feathers everywhere—my costume wasn’t exactly easy to maneuver in. A paramedic quickly bandaged my head.”
Despite the violent nature of the attack, Elton’s resilience shone through. Astonishingly, he described the ordeal as one of his “favorite” touring memories, emphasizing his ability to find humor even in dire situations.
This isn’t the only recent health challenge the iconic performer has faced. Earlier this year, John battled temporary vision loss, requiring assistance from his husband, David Furnish, during a performance of The Devil Wears Prada musical.
The Greensboro attack and its aftermath are detailed in John’s retrospective book, Farewell Yellow Brick Road, released in September. The memoir offers fans a glimpse into his extraordinary career, blending moments of triumph with challenges that tested his spirit.
Fans worldwide have expressed outrage and concern over the incident, with many calling for stricter security at live events. One fan wrote on social media, “Elton has given us decades of music and joy. He deserves to be safe on stage.”
As Elton John continues to reflect on his storied career, his resilience and humor in the face of adversity remind us why he remains an enduring icon in music history.
