Christmas traditions are under siege — at least, that’s how millions of holiday viewers feel after CBS announced a drastic programming shake-up.

The network has officially dropped the beloved holiday classics Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and Frosty the Snowman, replacing them with new musical specials featuring Dua Lipa and Josh Groban.

For nearly 60 years, Rudolph and Frosty have been staple holiday fare for families tuning in during December. Generations have grown up with the stop-motion magic of Rudolph and the whimsical charm of Frosty. Now, with CBS no longer holding the broadcast rights, the switch has sparked a firestorm of backlash online.

New Faces, Old Frustrations

Instead of Rudolph’s shiny red nose and Frosty’s jolly grin, viewers will be treated to An Evening with Dua Lipa, a glitzy concert event featuring the pop star performing alongside a full orchestra. The special will include a highly anticipated duet with Elton John, giving it star power — but, for many, lacking the warmth and nostalgia of the original.

Josh Groban will also headline Josh Groban & Friends Go Home for the Holidays, a festive special centered on adoption awareness and family togetherness. While heartwarming in its own right, fans of the animated classics aren’t sold.

“Why mess with tradition?” asked Rebecca Torres, a longtime viewer from Illinois. “Every year, we watch Rudolph with our kids. Now we’re supposed to switch gears to pop concerts? It doesn’t feel right.”

Social Media Meltdown

The decision lit up social media like a Christmas tree. Thousands of fans took to platforms like X (formerly Twitter) to express their outrage.

Carlos D. Howard posted, “Probably because it’s a much-watched show as a family and they don’t want wholesome content on TV. Only fear-mongering depressing crap.” For Howard, this isn’t just about losing Rudolph — it’s about what he sees as a decline in family-friendly television.

Others were more blunt, accusing CBS of chasing profit over tradition. “This is corporate greed, plain and simple,” wrote one user.

But some fans were prepared for the inevitable. “That’s okay. I got it on VHS,” one commenter quipped. Another added, “No worries. I bought it on Amazon Prime.”

A New Home for the Classics

For those fearing a Rudolph-less Christmas, there’s good news. NBC has regained the broadcast rights to both Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and Frosty the Snowman. This move marks a return to their original network home, a nostalgic full-circle moment for these holiday icons.

“Rudolph and Frosty belong on NBC,” said media analyst Sarah Jenkins. “That’s where it all began in the ’60s. It’s almost poetic that they’re going back.”

NBC has confirmed that the classics will air on their traditional dates, ensuring that families who cherish these animated gems won’t miss out.

The End of an Era?

Still, for many, the switch marks the end of an era. CBS was synonymous with these holiday specials, and their departure feels like a loss. “It’s like losing a piece of my childhood,” said Michael Grant, a father of three from Ohio. “We’d watch it every year on CBS. It’s tradition.”

As the debate rages on, one thing is clear — Rudolph and Frosty aren’t going anywhere. They’re just moving to a different channel. Whether viewers will follow them remains to be seen.

In the meantime, CBS is banking on modern holiday magic to capture audiences. But for millions of viewers, nothing will ever replace the timeless charm of a red-nosed reindeer and a jolly snowman.
