In a dramatic twist, President-elect Donald Trump hinted at mass pardons for January 6 defendants just hours after President Joe Biden shocked the nation by pardoning his son, Hunter Biden.

The unprecedented move by Biden, which absolved his son of multiple federal crimes, has already sparked outrage across the political spectrum and reignited debates over justice, accountability, and corruption.

Trump, who recently reclaimed the White House in a stunning election victory, took to his social media platform, Truth Social, to lambast Biden’s decision and suggest potential action of his own.

“Does the pardon given by Joe to Hunter include the J-6 Hostages, who have now been imprisoned for years? Such an abuse and miscarriage of justice!” Trump posted late Sunday night.

Trump’s Pledge to “Fix” the DOJ

The president-elect’s transition team quickly followed up with a blistering statement targeting the Department of Justice (DOJ), accusing it of being a partisan weapon under Democratic control.

“The failed witch hunts against President Trump have proven that the Democrat-controlled DOJ and other radical prosecutors are guilty of weaponizing the justice system,” said Trump spokesperson Steven Cheung. “That system of justice must be fixed, and due process must be restored for all Americans.”

Trump has long promised to overhaul federal agencies he claims have been used to target him and his supporters. During his campaign, he pledged to review the cases of over 1,500 individuals charged or convicted in connection with the January 6 Capitol riot, describing them as political prisoners.

Hunter Biden’s Controversial Pardon

The Biden pardon comes as Hunter, 54, faced looming sentencing for federal gun and tax charges. In June, he was convicted of possessing a firearm while addicted to crack cocaine. He also pleaded guilty to evading $1.4 million in taxes.

Initially, Biden promised he wouldn’t intervene in his son’s legal troubles. “I said I’d abide by the jury decision. I will do that and I will not pardon him,” Biden told reporters during the G7 summit in June.

Yet, on Sunday night, Biden reversed course, issuing a sweeping pardon for all offenses committed by Hunter between January 1, 2014, and December 1, 2024. The president justified the decision by citing what he called selective prosecution of his son.

“There has been an effort to break Hunter — who has been five and a half years sober, even in the face of unrelenting attacks and selective prosecution,” Biden said in a statement. “In trying to break Hunter, they’ve tried to break me… Enough is enough.”

Political Fallout

The pardon has already drawn sharp criticism from Republicans. Senator Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) expressed disbelief over Biden’s about-face.

“I’m shocked President Biden pardoned his son Hunter because he said many, many times he wouldn’t. I believed him,” Grassley posted on X (formerly Twitter). “Shame on me.”

House Republicans, who have spent months investigating the Biden family’s alleged influence-peddling schemes, also condemned the move.

“Joe Biden has lied from start to finish about his family’s corrupt influence-peddling activities,” said House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.). “Not only has he falsely claimed he never met with his son’s foreign business associates, but he also lied when he said he wouldn’t pardon Hunter.”

Comer’s committee has alleged that the Biden family engaged in a years-long influence-peddling scheme, leveraging Joe Biden’s political connections for financial gain.

“The charges Hunter faced were just the tip of the iceberg,” Comer added. “Rather than come clean, the Biden Crime Family continues to avoid accountability.”

What’s Next?

Trump’s veiled promise to pardon January 6 defendants signals a potential wave of clemency once he takes office. During his campaign, he characterized those charged as patriots who were unfairly targeted for opposing what he calls a stolen election.

Legal experts warn that such mass pardons could further polarize an already divided nation. But Trump’s supporters see it as a necessary step to correct what they view as a weaponized justice system.

“The American people have given President Trump a clear mandate to restore fairness and integrity,” said Cheung. “That includes righting the wrongs of the past four years.”

As the clock ticks down on Biden’s presidency, both sides are bracing for a turbulent transfer of power—one likely to be marked by legal battles, public outrage, and sweeping changes to the nation’s justice system.

  1. One crime is greater than the other. Comparison is a joke! One crime has been admitted! The other involves a conviction of guilt by a jury and denial by the culprit.

  2. First, Trump has said all along he would pardon the traitors from Jan 6. He also pardoned his son in laws father and now appointed him ambassador to France so please let’s get over it. We need a total remake of our government.
