Hugh Hewitt, the veteran Washington Post columnist and conservative radio host, has officially parted ways with the newspaper, he revealed to Fox News on Friday. Hewitt, known for his staunch pro-Trump stance, has been a contributor to the Post since 2017, where he was one of the few right-leaning voices in an opinion section and editorial board noted for its liberal tilt.

“I have in fact quit the Post,” Hewitt confirmed, adding that he had only been contributing a column every six weeks. “I recently offered to write another pro-Trump column ahead of the election, but informed David Shipley [editorial page editor] of my decision to leave on Friday morning.” His latest article, published earlier this week, urged the MAGA movement to evolve if former President Donald Trump is re-elected.

Hewitt’s departure isn’t without controversy. On Friday, just hours before his announcement, a clip of him walking off the Post’s online show “First Look” went viral. During a tense discussion with liberal columnists Jonathan Capehart and Ruth Marcus on “Washington Post Live,” tempers flared over Trump’s rhetoric regarding election integrity, specifically his claims about voting irregularities in Pennsylvania’s Bucks County.

Capehart opened the segment by asking Marcus if Trump was “laying the groundwork for contesting the election” in Pennsylvania, referencing recent legal challenges. Marcus responded sharply, asserting, “No election can be fair in Donald Trump’s mind unless Donald Trump wins it.” When Hewitt attempted to counter, citing recent court rulings that supported some Republican complaints, Capehart cut him off, leading Hewitt to bristle. “We’re news people, even though it’s the opinion section. We have to report the whole story if we bring up part of it,” Hewitt retorted, referencing a court victory for the Republican National Committee in Bucks County.

Capehart fired back, accusing Hewitt of often “saying things that aren’t based in fact.” The exchange reached a boiling point when Hewitt abruptly stood up, declaring, “I won’t come back, Jonathan. I’m done. I’m done. This is the most unfair election ad I’ve ever been a part of.” He exited the live broadcast, leaving an empty frame behind, while the remaining hosts scrambled to regain control amid technical difficulties that cut off Marcus soon after.

The incident capped off weeks of tensions within the Post, which had recently decided, reportedly under the guidance of owner Jeff Bezos, to withhold any presidential endorsement this year. The move, a break from the Post’s tradition since 1976, was met with outrage among staff and readers alike, sparking resignations and prompting the loss of hundreds of thousands of subscriptions. While the Post was poised to endorse Vice President Kamala Harris, Bezos pulled the plug, reportedly in a bid to rebuild trust with skeptical readers and to “show the paper’s impartiality.”

Hewitt’s departure, ironically, runs counter to Bezos’ reported aim to include more conservative voices in the Post’s opinion section. Although Hewitt had reduced his contributions, publishing only seven columns in 2024 compared to nearly 50 the previous year, his voice added a rare ideological balance that now leaves a significant gap.

In response to Hewitt’s exit, the Washington Post released a brief statement highlighting “Washington Post Live” as a platform for “dynamic conversations and thought-provoking perspectives on top issues of the day,” without commenting directly on Hewitt’s departure.

  1. Impartiality does not means we HAVE to sane wash what Trump says. Do you think back in the 1940’s journalists were supposed to said positive things about Hitler or Mussolini in the name of impartiality?. Trump is an authoritarian wannabe and a fascist as described by many including lots of members of his own cabinet the last time he was POTUS and his own family members. Trump will lose the election fair and square BUT he will never admit it , stirring up the dumbest of his followers to create havoc for the sake of his ego…
I am sure Newsmax or Fox News or Truth (Gag) Media could use another Trump apologist

  2. It is too bad that you cannot handle the truth. Democrats want Trump dead (as evidenced by one attempted assassination and two potential attempts) so that they can continue to ruin this country! There are multiple accounts of voter fraud: votes flipping from Trump to Harris, voting machines not allowing one to vote for Trump, non citizens voting, ballot boxes exploding, Democrats
(fraudulently posing as election staff) kicking people out of line so that they cannot vote. Democrats are the problem! Irresponsible, immature, power hungry, cheating liars! Elections need to be fair but Democrats will do anything (and not be punished for it!) to turn this great country into a socialist country! Be prepared to eat bugs as your protein source because that is what will happen with Democrat rule!
