A mysterious disappearance in the Bahamas is spiraling into something far more disturbing, as a missing American woman’s family now claims her husband had a history of abuse — and may know more than he’s saying.

Lynette Hooker, 55, vanished under eerie circumstances on April 5 after what her husband described as a tragic accident at sea. But as the search drags on with no sign of her, shocking allegations from her own family are casting serious doubt on his story.

According to Bahamian authorities, Lynette’s husband, 58-year-old Brian Hooker, reported her missing after the couple encountered rough weather while traveling by dinghy to their yacht. He claimed Lynette fell overboard while holding the boat’s key, causing the engine to shut off. He says the current quickly pulled her away, and he was unable to save her before paddling back to shore to get help.

Days later, Lynette is still missing — and Brian has since been arrested in connection with her disappearance, though he has not been formally charged. Through his attorney, he “categorically and unequivocally denies any wrongdoing.”

But now, Lynette’s mother and daughter are painting a far more troubling picture of their marriage.

Her mother, Darlene Hamlett, says the couple’s 25-year relationship was rocky, marked by repeated separations and what she described as both physical and emotional abuse. Those claims were echoed by Lynette’s daughter, Karli Aylesworth, who didn’t hold back when describing her stepfather’s alleged behavior.

“There’s history of him choking her out and threatening to throw her overboard,” Aylesworth said, adding that the situation feels far too familiar given how her mother disappeared.

She also described a pattern of behavior when Brian drank, claiming his personality would shift into something more aggressive and antagonistic.

“He knew exactly how to push buttons,” she said. “And the fact that this happened the way it did… I believe there’s more to the story.”

The timeline of events has only fueled suspicion. Aylesworth says she didn’t learn her mother was missing until a call from Brian the following night — a moment she described as surreal and deeply unsettling.

“He just said it like it was nothing — ‘Your mom is missing,’” she recalled. “I was in shock. How do you just lose my mom?”

As hope fades, so does the family’s belief that Lynette will be found alive. Aylesworth admitted the odds are becoming harder to ignore with each passing day, though she’s still clinging to the possibility her mother somehow survived.

Meanwhile, Brian has publicly expressed heartbreak, claiming he made “desperate attempts” to reach Lynette before the currents separated them for good. He insists finding her remains his only focus.

But for Lynette’s family, the questions are only getting louder — and more chilling.

Was this truly a tragic accident at sea… or something far more sinister?
