Meghan Markle reportedly pushed hard to be present during one of the most emotional moments in modern royal history—but insiders now claim her motives had less to do with grief and more to do with spotlight.
According to royal author Tom Bower, the Duchess of Sussex was eager to make it to Balmoral Castle in September 2022 as Queen Elizabeth II lay in her final hours. But behind the scenes, tensions were already boiling over.
Bower claims Meghan saw the moment as “historic”—and wanted to be part of it.
“She wanted to be there for the photo opportunity,” he said during an appearance on Unfiltered with Kinsey Schofield. “She knew this would be remembered forever.”
At the heart of the drama, insiders say, was Meghan’s long-rumored rivalry with Catherine, Princess of Wales. Bower alleges Meghan didn’t want to be sidelined while Kate stood beside Prince William during such a defining royal moment.
“She wanted to show she was just as important,” Bower claimed.
The timing only added to the tension. Meghan and Prince Harry were already in the U.K. for a charity event when news broke that the Queen’s health had rapidly declined.
But what happened next turned into a full-blown family clash.
In his memoir Spare, Harry revealed he got into a heated argument with his father, King Charles III, after being told Meghan would not be welcome at Balmoral.
“He said I was welcome… but he didn’t want her,” Harry wrote, describing the moment as deeply upsetting.
The Duke didn’t hold back, recalling how he pushed back hard against what he felt was disrespect toward his wife. But the decision stood—and the reason, according to Charles, was simple: no spouses were being brought in.
That included Kate.
While William rushed to Balmoral alongside senior royals, Kate remained in Windsor to care for the couple’s children on their first day at a new school—a detail that ultimately helped defuse the argument.
In the end, neither Meghan nor Kate made the trip.
Instead, the once-close couples reunited days later for a tense but historic walkabout at Windsor Castle, a rare public appearance that briefly masked the deep fractures behind palace walls.
And while the world watched in mourning, insiders now say the drama unfolding behind the scenes was just as intense as anything seen in public—if not more.
