The college football world is reeling after the sudden death of former University of Wisconsin tight end Jack Pugh. He was just 24.

The school confirmed the heartbreaking news in a statement late Tuesday, sending shockwaves through teammates, fans, and the wider sports community. No cause of death has been released.

Pugh, a Columbus, Ohio native, played for the Badgers from 2021 to 2023 before making a deeply personal decision to step away from the game — not because of injuries, but to confront his mental health.

And he didn’t hide it.

In a raw and emotional 2023 Instagram post, Pugh revealed he had been battling prolonged depression and substance abuse, admitting he had struggled with thoughts of not wanting to be alive for years.

“My mental health was the reason I decided to hang it up,” he wrote at the time. “I decided I deserved a better life and to finally find happiness.”

He made it clear football wasn’t to blame — but said the sport, and life in general, had distracted him from facing what he was going through internally.

His honesty struck a chord with many.

Before his retirement, Pugh was considered one of Wisconsin’s promising young players — a four-star recruit who drew interest from powerhouse programs including Michigan, Penn State, Michigan State, Maryland, and Minnesota. Remarkably, he had only played football during his final two years of high school before rising to national attention.

Off the field, those who knew him say he left an even bigger impact.

“The Wisconsin athletics family is deeply saddened,” the program said in its tribute. “Jack was a positive light… he cared about people and was loved by his teammates and staff.”

Pugh went on to graduate from UW-Madison in 2025 — a milestone the school highlighted as part of his lasting legacy.

As news of his death spread, tributes poured in. Among them was former teammate and current New York Jets running back Braelon Allen, who kept his message short but powerful:

“Protect your mental.”

It’s a reminder that behind the helmets and highlight reels are real people — and battles that aren’t always visible.

If you or someone you know is struggling, you’re not alone. Help is available.
