What was supposed to be a high-energy night of international soccer turned into a chilling tragedy.

A man died after falling from a VIP section inside Banorte Stadium in Mexico City on Saturday, March 28—just moments before a friendly match between Mexico and Portugal was set to kick off.

The shocking incident happened inside the same iconic venue preparing to host the opening ceremony of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in just a matter of weeks.

According to authorities, the man reportedly climbed along the exterior of the stadium near the VIP box area. Officials believe he may have been intoxicated when he attempted to jump from the second level down to the first. Instead, he lost his footing and plunged to the ground below.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene, but the fall proved fatal.

In a statement, the Mexico City Prosecutor’s Office confirmed the incident occurred in a staging area of the stadium, where the man fell into a parking zone. Investigators quickly secured the scene, collecting forensic evidence and documenting the area as part of an ongoing probe.

Authorities say surveillance footage and witness accounts are now being reviewed to piece together exactly what led to the deadly fall. An autopsy is also underway to determine the precise cause of death and whether alcohol or other factors played a role.

The victim’s identity has not yet been released.

The tragedy casts a dark shadow over 2026 FIFA World Cup preparations, especially given the stadium’s historic significance. Formerly known as Estadio Azteca, the venue has undergone a massive $105 million renovation ahead of the tournament.

Set to host the World Cup opener on June 11, Banorte Stadium is poised to make history as the first stadium ever to host three World Cup tournaments, having previously done so in 1970 and 1986.

But now, just weeks before the world’s biggest sporting event arrives, questions are swirling about safety, security, and what exactly went wrong in the final moments before kickoff.

What should have been a celebration of global soccer has instead left fans shaken—and a family grieving a devastating loss.
