A beach outing in Western Australia took a frightening turn when a woman was bitten by a shark while swimming near a popular campground.

Authorities say the attack happened around 10:15 a.m. on Saturday, March 14, near Kurrajong Campground in Cape Range National Park, located outside the coastal town of Exmouth.

According to reports, the shark bit the woman while she was in the water. Officials believe the animal may have been around five feet long, although the exact species has not been confirmed.

Fortunately, the woman survived the encounter and was treated for what officials described as minor injuries. Her identity has not been publicly released.

After the incident, authorities urged visitors in the area to remain cautious in the water and report any shark sightings.

Kurrajong Campground is a popular destination for tourists and locals alike, known for its clear waters and wide range of outdoor activities. Visitors regularly swim, snorkel, fish, and explore the surrounding coastline, while others come to enjoy camping, rock climbing, and caving in Cape Range National Park.

Park officials say marine wildlife is common in the area and warn that some animals can pose risks to swimmers.

“Some marine animals may bite, sting, or have sharp spines,” the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions notes on its website, advising visitors to pay attention to warning signs and exercise caution when entering the water.

Officials also say that while Western Australia is home to some of the world’s most beautiful beaches, shark activity can occasionally lead to safety concerns.

In some cases, beaches are temporarily closed when sharks are spotted nearby or after an attack occurs.

The latest incident comes just days after another frightening shark encounter in the same region.

Electrician Dave Daniell was reportedly attacked by a nine-foot great white shark while out on the water near Graveyards and Hunters Beach, also near Exmouth.

Daniell said he had fallen into the water while boarding when the shark suddenly rushed toward him.

“It came flying in and bit my board,” Daniell told local media. “I managed to get my leg out of the way as it bit down.”

He said the shark knocked him back into the water during the encounter before he was eventually able to get away.

“It all happened pretty quick,” Daniell said.
