Nearly three years after the shocking murders that rocked a quiet college town, disturbing new details are shedding light on what may have been going through Bryan Kohberger’s mind the night four University of Idaho students were brutally killed.

On November 13, 2022, Madison Mogen, 21, Kaylee Goncalves, 21, Ethan Chapin, 20, and Xana Kernodle, 20, were stabbed to death inside their off-campus home in Moscow, Idaho. The crime stunned the nation and triggered a weeks-long manhunt before Kohberger was arrested more than a month later.

Now, forensic experts are weighing in on what they believe was the true motive behind the massacre.

A “Targeted Psychosexual Fantasy”?

According to forensic psychologist Dr. Gary Brucato — who helped develop the Columbia University Mass Murder Database — the attack may not have originally been intended to end in four deaths.

Instead, Brucato believes the crime was fueled by what he described as a “targeted psychosexual fantasy” focused on one specific individual inside the home.

“It appears his intel failed him,” Brucato has said in interviews. “He overestimated himself and underestimated women.”

The result? What may have begun as a plan to target a single victim allegedly spiraled into a mass killing.

More Than 150 Stab Wounds

Autopsy reports revealed the four victims were stabbed more than 150 times combined.

Xana Kernodle suffered more than 67 wounds. Kaylee Goncalves was stabbed nearly 40 times. Madison Mogen and Ethan Chapin were also killed in their beds. Investigators believe all but Kernodle were asleep when the attack began.

The sheer brutality of the injuries has continued to haunt the case.

Reports indicated that Goncalves’ facial structure was severely damaged. She also suffered injuries consistent with blunt force trauma and possible asphyxiation.

Experts have suggested that the concentration and intensity of wounds may point to rage — or something even more personal.

Who Was the “Intended Target”?

For months, speculation swirled about whether Kaylee Goncalves had been the primary target, given the severity of her injuries.

But Brucato has suggested another possibility: Madison Mogen.

According to this theory, Kohberger may have entered the home expecting to find Mogen alone — only to discover that Goncalves was unexpectedly sharing her bed that night. That surprise, some believe, may have disrupted whatever plan he had imagined.

“You punish the ones who see you,” Brucato explained in analyzing similar offender patterns. “The people who interrupt your fantasy.”

The idea is chilling: that the presence of a second person may have escalated the violence beyond what was originally intended.

“Insecurities” and Rage

Brucato also pointed to what he described as “profound insecurities,” theorizing that resentment toward attractive women may have played a role in the extreme violence.

He suggested that the attack on the victims’ faces could signal rage tied to perceived rejection.

It’s a theory — one of several — but it underscores how investigators and psychologists continue trying to understand what drove the crime.

Arrest, Guilty Plea, and Life Sentence

Bryan Kohberger was arrested on December 30, 2022, after authorities tracked him down following weeks of intense investigation.

He was charged with four counts of first-degree murder and one count of felony burglary.

In 2025, Kohberger pleaded guilty as part of a deal that removed the possibility of the death penalty. On July 23, 2025, he was sentenced to four consecutive life terms in prison without the possibility of parole.

The small college town of Moscow is still healing. Families of the victims continue to grieve. And while the legal chapter may be closed, the haunting questions about motive — and what truly happened inside that house — still linger.

One thing remains certain: the Idaho 4 tragedy left scars that will never fully fade.
