Coffee lovers, you might want to sit down for this one.
A woman featured on TLC’s hit series My Strange Addiction is making jaws drop after revealing she drinks nearly 100 cups of coffee a day — and suffers from daily diarrhea because of it.
Angela, a 45-year-old single mom from Jersey Shore, New Jersey, says she sips coffee “all day long,” consuming far more caffeine than most people drink in a week. In an exclusive clip from the upcoming episode, Angela visits her doctor at the urging of her kids, who are worried her habit has spiraled out of control.
At first, she shrugs it off.
“My kids just want me to get a physical, I guess,” she says casually.
But things take a turn when her doctor, general practitioner Dr. Sweta Shah, starts asking more pointed questions.
When Angela finally admits she’s had “almost 100 cups of coffee a day,” the doctor doesn’t mince words.
“That’s super excessive,” Shah tells her, explaining that science suggests about four cups a day is typically the upper limit for a person of average size.
Anything beyond that? It can lead to caffeine toxicity.
According to Shah, too much caffeine can spike heart rate, raise blood pressure, and wreak havoc on the digestive system. And that’s when Angela drops another bombshell: she has diarrhea every single day.
“I have diarrhea every day… but I thought that’s just like a part of pooping,” she says in the clip. “So that’s not normal to have diarrhea every day? That’s not a normal way to defecate?”
The answer is a firm no.
Shah explains that caffeine is technically a drug. In small amounts, it’s generally safe. But at the levels Angela is consuming, it becomes dangerous — and potentially life-threatening.
“You can die from drinking too much coffee?” Angela asks, visibly shaken.
“Yeah,” the doctor confirms.
Shah urges her to begin cutting back slowly, starting by seeing how long she can go each morning without reaching for her first cup. Angela also asks whether caffeine toxicity and addiction are reversible.
The good news? They can be — but only if she makes changes now.
The shocking episode of My Strange Addiction airs Wednesday, February 11 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on TLC — and if this sneak peek is any indication, viewers are in for a seriously eye-opening hour.
One thing’s for sure: after hearing Angela’s story, your morning latte might not hit quite the same.
