Netflix fans are sounding off after spotting Michelle Obama’s 2020 documentary Becoming tucked inside the streamer’s kids section. Yes, the kids section.
The sudden surge of attention comes just as Melania Trump’s new documentary, Melania, hit theaters and stirred up its own wave of political chatter. Viewers jumped onto Threads to swap screenshots, theories, and plenty of side-eye about how Netflix suddenly recategorized Becoming — and why.
Some users urged others to stream the doc nonstop to boost its visibility. Others were annoyed that a political, biographical film was being served to kids instead of adults. Netflix hasn’t commented.
Fans say the placement isn’t just odd — it raises questions about how streaming platforms rank and label politically sensitive content. And with Melania Trump’s film rolling out to packed theaters, people noticed the timing.
Becoming tracks Michelle Obama’s 34-city book tour and has lived comfortably in Netflix’s adult library for years. But sharp-eyed users noticed it also climbed to No. 4 on the U.S. Kids Top 10 list this week.
Meanwhile, Melania’s documentary opened to a huge $7 million weekend and premiered at the newly renamed Trump–Kennedy Center. The side-by-side contrast between how both films are being spotlighted only fueled the fire.
Some Michelle Obama fans admitted they intentionally streamed Becoming all weekend across multiple profiles to boost its ranking.
“One Facebook user said they played it on every TV in the house, on repeat,” as viewers coordinated online to push the doc back up the charts.
Commentators on Threads accused Netflix of trying to bury the film.
YouTube host Sarah O’Connell wrote: “Netflix has taken Michelle Obama’s documentary out of the adult Top 10 by recategorizing it as a kids film.”
Author Babak Seyed Shakeri claimed the move was political, writing: “Netflix is oppressing a woman of color’s success… This is done to not upset Trump and Melania because Netflix needs the government to approve their merger.”
Professor Jennifer Basquiat-Jones warned Netflix: “Cancellations and boycotts work… You’re on borrowed time. FIX THIS.”
Netflix hasn’t offered an explanation, and viewers are watching the rankings closely to see whether Becoming climbs back into the adult Top 10 or stays parked in the kids section.
Either way, the streaming charts just became the newest battleground in America’s ever-growing culture war.

You are an embarrassment to the American people and to this great country of ours. Jealousy is not becoming on you like everything else you have said and done. But most of all you need to go back and learn right from wrong and society expects of everyone in the USA. Obama is just mad because Americans love our First Lady Melania and not you. Facts are you hate any and all white people cause we didn’t like the corruption you and others did. Honesty is top in a lot of Americans. We don’t encourage chaos and riots or violence like you.
