Tony Romo has finally explained the strange on-air moments that had NFL fans buzzing during last weekend’s playoff game — and it turns out he wasn’t feeling anywhere close to 100 percent.
The former quarterback-turned-broadcaster found himself trending on social media after viewers noticed him making what many called “weird noises” while calling the Buffalo Bills’ playoff win over the Jacksonville Jaguars on CBS. Clips of the moment quickly spread online, with fans questioning what exactly was going on in the booth.
Now, Romo says illness was the culprit.
Speaking this week on SiriusXM, the CBS analyst admitted that multiple members of the broadcast crew were sick during the game, but powering through was never in doubt.
“Yeah, we had a bunch of guys sick,” Romo said. “We can’t miss a playoff game. It’s too much fun. It’s always special in playoff season.”
The moment that drew the most attention came when Bills wide receiver Tyrell Shavers nearly blocked a punt from Jaguars punter Logan Cooke. As slow-motion replays showed just how close the play was, Romo reacted audibly — reactions that immediately became meme-worthy online.
Romo, who called the game alongside longtime partner Jim Nantz, acknowledged that being on air for hours at a time leaves broadcasters open to criticism.
“When you’re on the air for three-and-a-half hours, you’re always trying to do the best you can,” he said. “There are moments where it’s great and others where it’s not so much. That’s sports. You come back next time and try to do a great job.”
The scrutiny isn’t unique to Romo. In recent weeks, other high-profile NFL analysts like Tom Brady, Cris Collinsworth, and Greg Olsen have also found themselves under the social media microscope during postseason games.
Despite the chatter, Romo’s job security isn’t going anywhere. He remains under contract with CBS through the end of the decade after signing a massive 10-year, $180 million deal in 2020. The former Dallas Cowboys star is estimated to be worth around $80 million, according to Celebrity Net Worth, on top of what he earned during his playing career.
Romo will be back on the call again this weekend when the Buffalo Bills head to Denver to face the top-seeded Broncos with a spot in the AFC Championship Game on the line.
Love it or hate it, Romo’s voice — sniffles and all — isn’t leaving the NFL playoffs anytime soon.
