A Texas hunting trip turned deadly after 45-year-old Jose Ramirez of Grapevine accidentally shot himself while removing his gun from a vehicle, officials confirmed.

Texas Game Wardens said they responded to a call just after midnight on Saturday, November 15, following what they described as a “tragic hunting accident.” Authorities said Ramirez’s firearm discharged unexpectedly as he was taking it out of the car, hitting him in the process.

Despite desperate life-saving efforts at the scene, Ramirez died from his injuries. “We always wish a tragedy like this could have been avoided,” the wardens said in a statement, urging hunters to always treat firearms as loaded and to double-check safety measures before handling them.

Ramirez’s family described him as “the pillar of our home” in a GoFundMe launched by his son, also named Jose. “He taught me to never give up, to work hard, and to live with a happy heart,” the younger Ramirez wrote. “His greatest joy was his granddaughter, who’s about to turn one. She was the light of his life.”

The GoFundMe campaign has since drawn an outpouring of support from friends, relatives, and local residents devastated by the loss.

Texas officials are continuing to remind hunters this season to always unload firearms before transporting them — and to remember that even a momentary lapse can be fatal.
