A quiet afternoon in Simi Valley turned into a scene of chaos and tragedy when a small plane crashed into a residential neighborhood on Saturday, killing the pilot and damaging two homes.
Thick smoke poured into the sky as the aircraft went down in the Wood Ranch area, a suburban community about 50 miles northwest of Los Angeles. Emergency crews rushed to the scene, quickly blocking off surrounding streets and urging residents to stay away.
The plane’s wreckage was found between two homes, both of which sustained structural damage and were partially engulfed in flames. Despite the intense fire, all residents inside the homes were safely evacuated, and no injuries on the ground were reported, according to the Ventura County Fire Department.
Roughly 40 firefighters worked to contain the blaze, then moved into salvage and overhaul mode once the fire was extinguished.
Details about the pilot have not yet been released, and the cause of the crash remains unknown. Authorities have confirmed that the aircraft was a single-engine, fixed-wing plane.
The National Transportation Safety Board has been called in to investigate the crash, and more information is expected in the coming days as officials work to determine what led to the fatal incident.
