Jennifer Garner, known for her iconic role in 13 Going on 30, broke hearts this Thanksgiving with a deeply emotional announcement. The 52-year-old actress revealed the passing of her beloved golden retriever, Birdie, a constant presence in her life since 2015, following her split from ex-husband Ben Affleck.
In a heartfelt Instagram post, Garner acknowledged the weight of mourning a pet in the face of global challenges but felt compelled to honor Birdie’s life.
“Birdie let us know on Thursday that she wasn’t feeling herself,” Garner wrote. “A renowned foodie, Birdie never missed a meal. We were surprised to learn that, not only was she very ill, but she was also at the end of her life.”
The timing was poignant. Garner’s eldest daughter, Violet, had just returned from college for the Thanksgiving break.
The actress shared a touching insight into Birdie’s final moments, saying, “The vet told us that dogs often hang on until their person comes home from college. We believe Birdie did just that, so we could pet her soft ears together and thank her for being the world’s best dog.”
A Life of Service and Love
Birdie was more than just a family pet. She trained as a therapy dog, bringing comfort to young patients at the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles. Garner fondly described her as a gentle soul with a unique gift.
“Birdie loved to read,” she shared. “You knew just how to give people what they needed. She lived a happy dog life and is now in the role she was born to play: angel girl. It’s a gift to love and be loved by such a creature as Birdie the Doggie.”
The post quickly filled with messages of condolence from fans and followers. “Don’t apologize for your grief. Our fur babies are our family,” one follower wrote. Another added, “Thank you for sharing Birdie with us. Losing a pet is tough. Sorry for your loss.”
Garner and Affleck: A Decade of Love, a Complicated Ending
Garner adopted Birdie in the wake of her high-profile separation from Affleck after a decade of marriage. The couple officially divorced in 2018 but have maintained a co-parenting relationship for their three children: Violet, Seraphina, and Samuel.
Their split made headlines again in 2021 when Affleck reflected on their marriage during an interview on The Howard Stern Show. He admitted feeling “trapped” and linked his struggles with alcoholism to the dissolution of their relationship.
“We had a marriage that didn’t work,” Affleck confessed. “It was somebody I love and respect but to whom I shouldn’t be married any longer… what I did was [I] drank a bottle of scotch and fell asleep on the couch, which turned out not to be the solution.”
His remarks sparked backlash, leading Affleck to clarify that his actions were entirely his responsibility. Meanwhile, Garner remained poised and largely silent about the public scrutiny.
A Complicated Love Story
In a rare interview with Vanity Fair, Garner opened up about her complex relationship with Affleck, calling him the “love of her life” despite their differences.
“He’s the most brilliant person in any room, the most charismatic, the most generous,” Garner said. “He’s just a complicated guy. I always say, ‘When his sun shines on you, you feel it.’ But when the sun is shining elsewhere, it’s cold. He can cast quite a shadow.”
As Garner navigates this new chapter without Birdie, her fans and loved ones continue to offer support. For Garner, Birdie’s memory remains a testament to unconditional love—a fitting reminder of the joys and sorrows of family, both human and furry.
